'ADAM S. DOYLE' www.adamsdoyle.com
A freelance artist in New York City, I grew up in Boston and lived for a time in Los Angeles and Rome. My work appears in books, magazines, kid's books, galleries, comics, newspapers, theatrical posters, and innumerable web sites. I am committed to creating captivating imagery that communicate clearly.
I am inspired to create work that no one has ever seen before, yet have always known to be true.
I make images that keep the window partly open between the subject being depicted and the marks made by my hand. In painting a sparrow, for example, the bird is clearly a bird. While at the same time the oil paint on the canvas remains oil paint. This open relationship allows two important qualities to be at the forefront: energy and transformation.
By energy, I am addressing the physical movement of the subject being depicted and the motion of my gesture during the act of creation. The brush strokes describe not only surface, form, color, and texture, but makes visible the very breath of life.
By transformation I am speaking of the process in which a flat, blank surface becomes another reality. The painted canvas contains the illusion of bird. A skilled artist can paint a sparrow so that it looks completely real, as if it were a photograph. A partly painted sparrow however reveals to the viewer the alchemy at work. The brush strokes are visibly morphing from surface to paint to flying bird.
This magic is a feature I find fascinating and endeavor to keep alive. And ultimately, this form provides a means for communicating ideas with richness and clarity. It is my hope that the viewer can enjoy my work and regain a child-like wonder for the shared human experience that art provides.
